Everyone is invited to join the Family Roots Wisconsin when they hold their monthly genealogy meeting on the third Saturday of each month at 9:00am.  Meetings include a time to share news, a time to share genealogy research techniques, and sometimes a speaker.

This month's meeting features UW-Oshkosh Archivist Joshua Ranger, who will explain how to search the UW system online catalog.

The January meeting of the Family Roots Genealogy Club features UW-Oshkosh Archivist Joshua Ranger, who will explain how to search the UW System online catalog. The Wisconsin Area Research Center system is unlike anything in the United States. Each of the 13 Area Research Centers is essentially a branch office of the Wisconsin Historical Society's archives that keeps a portion of the Society's rich collection of family and area history materials local based on geographic jurisdictions. It also permits most of those materials from being borrowed and lent among the partners, allowing the public and students alike the opportunity to conduct their research at a location closer to them. The key to understanding all that is available to you through this program is the catalog.  As a close partner of UW System, the Wisconsin Historical Societies archives are cataloged within the larger library catalog.  Ranger will teach attendees how to make sense of this large and, at time, complicated system to identify records you can use to help advance your family history. Joshua Ranger has been the University Archivist at the UW Oshkosh Archives and Area Research Center since 1998.  Prior to that, he worked at the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Chromebooks are available for checkout from the library if you need one to attend.  To participate, join the meeting from your computer, tablet, or smartphone.
