3D Printing in SMITHworks
Drop in during opening hours to give 3D printing a try!
We have two, Raise3D E2 printers in SMITHworks, we print using a PLA filament (plastic). The maximum build plate is 13 x 9.4 x 9.4 inch (330 x 240 x 240 mm). We have printed thousands of prints from tiny game piece replacements and plier caps to large dice towers and helmets. Check out the hallway cabinet outside of SMITHworks to see samples.
Where do I start?
That depends on what you are wanting to learn or create!
Do you just want to get a cool print? Then we have some great sample files on display in our cabinet that you can request to have printed, all the work is done!
Do you want to print a pre-made file? There are lots of websites with free .stl files for 3D printing such as thingiverse.com.
Do you want to practice 3D designing? A website such as tinkercad.com (free signup required) is a great place to start.
How much does it cost?
$0.05 per gram
The sample files in the cabinet have prices listed. For other files you'll need to drop in during opening hours and run the file through the 3D software to get a price estimate.
What 3D software program do you use and how can I learn?
We use the program ideaMaker, there is a guide book in SMITHworks with screenshots, and an attendant will check in with you as you prepare your file (upon availability) and will verify your file before saving.
Can I bring my own file?
Of course! Our program uses .stl files.
What color options do I have?
We always have black and white available.
We also rotate between red and blue, drop in to see which color is currently available.
Can I print in multiple colors?
We can only print in one color.
If the item has multiple pieces, you could slice them into individual files, alternatively you can paint the item after it prints.
